Promoting A Sustainable Environment

Poole is a town rich in history with an outstanding natural environment which has grown considerably in the last fifty years. It is now entering a new phase of development with ambitious plans for the town’s regeneration offering exciting opportunities for a new public waterfront, housing, leisure and shopping which will transform Poole over the next ten years or so.

This brings with it the challenge to deliver places of high quality which meets the needs of people who live, work and visit here whilst safeguarding Poole’s uniquely valuable natural environment for future generations. At the same time we are becoming increasingly aware of our responsibilities to reduce our carbon footprint and address the effects of climate change.

In December 2006 the Borough of Poole signed the Nottingham Declaration, recognising that climate change is likely to be one of the key drivers for change within our community this century. The council is committed to reducing its own carbon footprint and to encourage partners in all sectors to take similar action.

The Affordable Warmth Strategy aims to address the issue of fuel poverty and includes measures to assist households in tackling this. The Nature Conservation Strategy for Poole was prepared by a multi-agency working group to identify how local habitats which sustain the diversity of nature, can continue to function effectively, whilst meeting the social and economic needs of the town.

Recognising the importance of these issues, a new Sustainable Environment Partnership was formed in 2008.
