Have your say on beaches!

Leisure Services are seeking the views of residents, visitors and businesses on proposals for the Beach Master Plan.

Leisure Services are seeking the views of residents, visitors and businesses on proposals for the Beach Master Plan.

Leisure Services are producing a Seafront Beaches Master Plan to conserve, improve and invest in Poole’s Seafront Beaches. It will set out the standards for improvements on the beaches that will be delivered over a 25 year period to preserve the long term future of the beaches.

The Seafront Beaches Master Plan aims to:

  • Conserve the beautiful natural environment
  • Improve the range of facilities to encourage visitors all year round
  • Invest in the ageing infrastructure, such as drainage and toilets, to ensure the preservation of core services

Cllr Judy Butt, Portfolio Holder for Public Engagement and Participation, said: "Our beaches belong to everyone and are our town's premier natural asset. However, beaches from Sandbanks to Branksome Dene Chine have remained the same since the 1950s with minimal investment and a very basic 'offer'.

"We realise that to maintain the current standard of the beaches and their environment, the council needs to work in different ways to maintain and improve services. This will require the right level and mix of funding from tax payers, business investment and pay-to-use activities. We are looking to everyone in Poole to help us shape how we can proceed with enhancing and improving Poole's loveliest legacy, it's beaches."

From 5 March 2012 the leaflet will be available to view on www.boroughofpoole.com/investinginbeaches. It will also be distributed around the town in places such as Libraries, Sport Centres, Beaches and council buildings. The leaflet sets out the council’s initial ideas for the different beaches and where we could consider improvements.

Responses can be made online or by returning a form to us. Anyone who responds also has the chance to enter a prize draw to win the use of a short term let beach hut at Branksome Chine during the summer of 2012.

Clive Smith, Head of Leisure Services, said: "Poole is a successful tourist destination with international reputation for its award winning beaches. It’s important that we get lots of people’s views on our initial ideas as they will help shape the plan moving forward. People may also have some ideas we haven’t yet considered so I’d like to encourage everyone to have their say."

Leisure Services will also be holding a series of face-to-face events to give you the opportunity to come and see them in person. Come along to one of the following events:

  • Tuesday 13th March - 9am - 4.30pm, Dolphin Shopping Centre
  • Monday 2nd April - 10am - 4pm, Sandbanks beach entrance
  • Tuesday 3rd April - 11am - 3pm, Upton Country Park
  • Wednesday 4th April - 10am - 4pm, Sandbanks beach entrance
  • Tuesday 17th April - 9am - 4.30pm, Dolphin Shopping Centre
