What we are doing now
Achievements to date include:
- The Council has adopted Poole's Local Development Framework core strategy which includes many policies promoting a sustainable environment.
- Adoption of Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole's MAA seeks to develop an environmental programme that meets the objective of promoting growth within environmental means.
- The Council has developed and adopted a costed Carbon Management Programme for reducing carbon emissions in local authority operations through the Carbon Trust's Programme and the Bournemouth and Poole NHS have initiated a carbon management programme.
- Big Green Fortnight in May 2009 across Bournemouth and Poole was co-ordinated by Bournemouth 2026 and Poole Partnership and supported by Bournemouth Borough Council and the Borough of Poole to raise awareness of practical solutions for more sustainable lifestyles. (See report below)
- Bournemouth and Poole conducted thermal imaging flight at end of 2008 to help identify buildings losing heat through their roofs using funding from the Energy Saving Trust.
- Implementation of the Local Transport Plan for Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole which includes policies and proposals for promoting sustainable travel.
- Significant progress in developing a comprehensive cycleway network to provide greater choice and promote sustainable travel.
- Key infrastructural improvement of bus facilities with similar bus operator investment to promote bus travel with associated growth in patronage.
- A Strategic Flood risk assessment of the whole of the Borough and for the town centre has been undertaken and £1.9M of funding has been secured to improve coastal defences.
- A Joint Interim Heathlands Interim Framework is being implemented to protect the heathland from development.
- “Blue Flag” awards for 4 beaches and “Green Flag” awards for 2 parks.
- Adopted an Affordable Warmth Strategy and 700 households have benefited from Energy Efficiency Commitment Schemes.
- Poole has achieved Level 1 as defined for NI 188 Adaptation to Climate Change.
- A Local Climate Impacts Profile (LCLIP) was carried out for Bournemouth and Poole in 2008 documenting information on past and current severe weather and associated impacts.
