The overall aims of the study were to increase the understanding of the housing needs of BME households across Dorset, as well as ensuring that existing providers gave equal access to their services and integrated the needs of BME communities into their everyday activities.
The study included the Borough of Poole;Christchurch Borough Council; East Dorset District Council; North Dorset District Council; Purbeck District Council; West Dorset District Council; and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council. Bournemouth Borough Council was not included in this study as they had already carried out research on BME housing needs.
The study has the following main objectives:
- To gain information on the current and projected BME population and
households;
- To gain information on the current housing circumstances of BME households;
- To investigate the housing needs and aspirations of BME households, including
any supported and sheltered housing needs;
- To assess the knowledge of BME households of the availability of current
services and their ability/desire to access them;
- To identify any barriers to accessing housing; and
- To identify the best methods of continuing engagement with, and communication to, BME communities in the future.
Over half of respondents to a 'Study of the Housing Requirements of BME Households in Dorset and Poole' were from the town (264 out of 469 respondents).
The report findings focuses on housing and related support services but also gives insight into BME people's satisfaction with living here.
Their overall satisfaction matches the general populations at 87% (compared to 2008 Place Survey). Differences arise, however, between ethnic groups with Chinese or Other, Asian/Asian British, and Mixed ethnic groups having the highest level (90% or above) but Black/Black British respondents having the lowest level (69%). Black/ Black British people also have less sense of belonging to the local area (34% said 'not at all' compared to sample average of 21%).
People also told us what is it like trying to access our services highlighting some of the barriers, like complicated structures and systems and language barriers. The report recommends ways to improve our engagement with BME people.
